28th October - The Missing Peregrinator Journey is Here.
The match programme for 27th October unfortunately carried the same
Peregrinator as the previous week. Andrew, our famous programme editor
(or should I say infamous?) apologises for this error and has promised
that he will try to print the programme whilst he is not asleep in
future. So that regular readers don't miss their fix of Peregrinators'
Prowess, here is the missing article.
BRAVERY, COMMITMENT, HUNGER.
I have seen this headline somewhere in the past couple of weeks. English
sportsmen have slipped up recently. England’s shocking defeat in Moscow
certainly filled some column inches in the newspapers. Certainly true to
say that, our players lacked bravery, commitment, and hunger. I hope
that Scotland get through so that I have a team to follow. Our rugby
team did well to reach the final – pity about the try that wasn’t! It
probably swung the game. Finally, on the following day, Lewis Hamilton,
, in only his first season, was pipped at the final hurdle in Brazil.
His day will come I am sure.
We won easily at Banbury last Saturday – though our supporters were
grumbling at half time. Probably not a case of lacking commitment – more
about being dragged down to the oppositions’ level with a lacklustre
display. “They need someone out there to gee them up” was a common cry.
Not nice to watch – but a different game in the second half when young
Hunt came on as sub and with his first touch (his head actually) put us
level. He is undoubtedly our Peter Crouch. The news I, and many others,
feared/expected finally came last night. Martin Jol’s departure.
Clearly, something is wrong at White Hart Lane. The same players as last
season, almost £40 millions spent on the summer influx. A lack of
commitment by players? Too many cooks? Lack of a midfield
general/playmaker? Jol deserves full credit for what he has achieved
over the last three years – he will not be going away empty handed as
his pay off would keep many of us here today in comfort for the rest of
our lives! Maybe he had taken the team as far as he could. In my working
career, I recruited people to help move the organisation forward. When
we got over the hurdles and changed direction some were unable to cope
with the challenge. I think you see that in football management but with
an important difference-, almost half the managers/coaches are doomed to
failure by the law of averages.
I read an interesting article in The Times this week – ‘Celebrity wares,
the price of fame’. Apparently, auction sites such as eBay are
encouraging obsession with celebrity. This article, quite rightly in my
opinion, condemns this obsession. One of David Beckham’s old cars (a BMW
convertible with thousands of miles on the clock worth £15000) sold for
£90,000. Michael Jordan’s half smoked cigar fetched £400. Pete Rose,
former Cincinnati Reds baseball player who beat Ty Cobb’s record for
career hits in 1995 was alleged in court to have sold his ‘record
beating bat’ to a string of collectors. There is a serious side,
however. Brazil 1950 World Cup medal made just £85 and a Rocky Marciano
punch bag made £150,000 plus. The writer Matthew Syed reckoned Joe
DiMaggio’s passport ‘an absolute’ gem at $4,800. Now all this has given
me an idea to get some money in for the club. What about an old pair of
boots worn by manager Paul Shanley? A jock strap worn by our striker and
leading appearance/goal scorer David Percival? Or perhaps an old pair of
shoes/toothbrush from Chairman Fitchen? The possibilities are endless –
I shall ask Eileen to follow this up. Am I being serious? You bet!
Their driver won the £30 raffle prize at the Chisledon Blueprint game.
Therefore, that was some consolation for our visitors. Maybe it will be
YOUR turn today. Eileen and her team will be at the table as usual!
Eileen has a supply of blue bags, which she wants to give away. All she
asks in return is that you fill them with clothes, toys that will then
be passed on raising money for our club.
My son Aidan, who lives in Sheffield has been telling me of the
celebrations for Sheffield FC (they play in the Northern Premier League
Division One South), oldest football club in the world. These were held
in the Cathedral with the FIFA president present. A match against Inter
Milan is being arranged at Bramall Lane.
